Lithgow jail

She was found with a blackened, bloody knee that she had been stabbed seven times.

After being released from custody, she had been taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released.

When she had been released from hospital, Miss Phelan said she met Mr Gorman at his home in Stroud on July 19.

"I asked him how the injuries were and he said he'd been stabbed and he was bleeding.

"I told him the wounds on his legs were self-inflicted and I asked him if it could be that he did it," she said.

"He admitted his innocence. He said that he did stab me twice but he was trying to avoid harming himself.

"He apologised but there was no reconciliation or forgiveness."

Miss Phelan, of Stroud, went back into court on Friday to give evidence.

Defence barrister Nicky McCrone QC said the court heard Mr Gorman had repeatedly assaulted Miss Phelan's mother and sister.

He pleaded guilty to an offence under section 9 of the Sexual Offences Act 1980.

The judge told him: "This is a serious attack against a young woman by a man of her own persuasion.

"This is a particularly ugly attack where all of the victim's injuries were inflicted with a cutting instrument."

He sentenced him to three years in jail.

The offences are related and were also in relation to a series of incidents before Mr Gorman's arrest in October 2008.

Mr Justice Thomas said Mr Gorman must be given credit for three months he missed from his four-year sentence for attacking Miss Phelan but that must be offset against his criminal behaviour which included threatening her with a knife.

After sentencing, he told Mr Gorman to be "courageous".

"That attitude is important," he added.

Rice seedlings key to future of norther australia cattle farms

WILLIAM BRUNER, Oregon State University

A study in the July 13, 2015, issue of Science reports a new method of estimating grain yields by tracking farmers' fields. Using software developed by the same researchers who worked on the current study, the researchers collected data on the amount of seeds, feed, water, fertilizers, and other inputs needed to grow a 1,000-lb. field. The researchers divided this amount into 100 different "seed-stock" crops grown at three different times: on the farm with no input at all, at a farm with input at two years, and at a farm with input on one year.

For the first time, the researchers found that even with a minimum number of inputs, the researchers found that more than 20 percent of yield could be made from any particular crop species, especially if seeds are grown without the fertilizer the crop requires to grow. If the amount of inputs were evenly divided into smaller parts—say, by a quarter or a third—the researchers found that only about 50 percent of yield could be made. "At least the amount of feed required per square inch of soil is important, but the amount of fertilizer is more important," says Robert B. Anderson, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher at OSU. "If you leave this right at zero, it's not really a factor," Anderson says. "What you're really interested in is how much yield can be made if you have less fertilizer."

At their core, Bower and other researchers are interested in the impact of these factors on the future of southern farm operations in Australia. With an average income level for Austronesian farm families of $15,000, farmers in the state of QLD, which sits at the foothills of the Great Australian Bight in the south, generate more than half of Australia's corn, wheat, and soybeans, as well as a good amount of soybeans grown on land in the country's northern regions such as Western Australia and New South Wales. However, farmers at the heart of southern Australia's farm operations may end up feeding all of their grain to fewer than six other households, or feeding all of their grain to only one household, says David A. Wilson, an assistant professor of agricultural science and management at UNSW. And even at such large farms, "the productivity can be quite poor," Wilson says.

The researchers' method, called feed-by-asset analysis and field-management modeling, took in the inputs needed for the crops—such as feed, fertilizer, and irrigation water—in order to determine how much each crop contributed to the farm's yield. They assumed that, if farmers use the same inputs for each crop in th

Late charge has bulls on top of bushrangers at bus station in Chennai (PHOTOS)

The victim said the men, two brothers and a neighbour of the suspect were driving a diesel bus near Chennai's Bhadrapur International Airport, when they began beating them with sticks and rubber mallets, according to the report. The victims said that they took steps to call the police but were ignored.

Police said they found a silver-coloured SUV on top of one of the bushrangers. The man told police that he was on his way home from work when a man with the name of Sajid hit him on the back of the head. He said when he reached the bus station, he realised there had been a hit-and-run incident.

He said that he used his mobile phone to call for help but it rang to a number where one of the men picked up, slapped him, pushed him to the ground and started hitting him with sticks, said the report. The incident took place at around 10.10 pm on December 13 and police said an FIR was filed in the case.

Srithika Tharoor, chairperson of the All India Congress Committee-Mumbai, said the incident was a shocking turn of events. "For a man to strike a woman at a bus stop is totally un-manly. It's not just a case of bad taste," she told The Indian Express in a statement.

"It was clearly the man on top of the victim who should have reacted in the most severe manner. What is wrong with him? A simple thing, which he failed to do, will cost him dearly," Ms Tharoor said, adding that it is an outrage that a woman could have suffered a serious assault by the accused.

But local residents, who witnessed the incident, said that the man is in his 30s, about 3ft tall, and thin. He appeared to be in his late forties, she said. She had earlier said he would never hurt her.

On Sunday, an employee of a Delhi hospital's rape prevention and empowerment (RAPE) unit on Wednesday said that a suspect wanted to be treated for a "heart attack" but was told that they could not because of the accused's medical condition.

The man is a 30-year-old man from Nagpur, the statement said. "He claims that on December 13, he had to go home early, because a man with a white picket had hit him on the back of the head, forcing the victim to run to a hotel as the man drove off," the statement said. "When he arrived to the hotel, the hotel staff was waiting for him there. After getting back home, the hotel staff informed the police about th

Riverina tourism spending bouncing back to levels not seen since 2007

Tremelo Beach, N.M. — It's hard to overestimate how important this spot in Northern New Mexico is to anyone.

If you love the cold water and sweeping ocean views of this popular stretch of beach near the coast, then you've come to the right place.

This year, Tremelo Beach reported record tourism numbers.

"The year 2017 was great for us," said Tom Stirling, the president of the Monterey County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Stirling said while the tourism boost has been big, not everyone wants to take it as seriously.

"This is the same type of thing that has gotten worse in the last few years," he said.

The tourist outlook

It hasn't been a full year since the first visit by George and Lili Lopez from Tijuana.

Last November, George Lopez gave a presentation about his and Lili Lopez's experience in Mexico on Spanish television, and his children were so engrossed, they were asking questions about the future of tourism in the area.

Tremelo Beach's annual average is currently at $2.1 million, and that's up from $2.1 million in 2012.

Stirling said that's because the area has grown since then.

It's one of several cities like Tremelo Beach to make up the tourism report card for 2016.

Last year, the town got about half its funding from Tijuana. Now that money's largely from Washington State, where the state spends more on tourism than anywhere else.

Tour de france julian alaphilippe stumbles in the mountains, in one of the most unlikely turns of events the world has seen.

After suffering a broken leg at the Tour de Suisse, the 21-year-old German has now been dropped to his third team on the 2015 calendar and a full recovery time of nearly eight weeks has eluded him. The crash left him without a ride for eight months, ending last Saturday's Tour of Qatar after he suffered what proved to be a fractured fibula. He had previously been in line for a place at the Tour de France but it became clear he could not survive the punishing peloton, so he instead signed for Dimension Data.

There was some hope that he would be given another chance in stage 9 at Tour of Beijing but the Italian has now moved up to fifth at Paris-Roubaix. He has only lost three stages overall since he first started racing in the sport at the end of last year but that could come to an end. After an attack crash at Tirreno-Adriatico in February that ruled him out of Paris-Nice, he has now been dropped for the first time in his career, which has led to speculation that he has suffered a serious knee injury. There are few guarantees as to what injury he has but he said on Friday evening: "I'm feeling good and feeling like I've learned something."

A race to forget, say French fans

In one of the strangest cases of all, Thomas de Gendt, who won the 2013 Tour de France but has so far failed to gain an advantage, has been dropped to join the Movistar squad. After a successful year with his hometown team, Trek-Segafredo, De Gendt had hoped to get further promotion with the team he had previously signed with but is now expected to ride for Paris-Nice, which also includes Romain Bardet, who has failed to secure a stage win and has not raced since the end of August.

With most of the other leading contenders unable to respond to a breakaway, De Gendt could find himself dropped at the hands of the GC favourites who are keen to secure a win to get back on track in the race's final stages. Even though the race is only a week away, many feel it is far too easy to lose a rider like De Gendt.

"I think that a bunch has to give the win," said Belgian director of road race operations and media relations Simon Carcoc, who has watched the race from the peloton, as reported in the Times. "There are so many attacks and I really think that there should be more teams for him. It is a hard race on the climbs, so you have to get in early. I know that som

The club also said it would introduce a new club logo and logo badge to represent its home ground.

Mentors will be employed by the Swans' recruitment team to review the proposal during the 2015 season.

Mentors are to work under the leadership of Ben Guthrie, who is managing director of AFL.com.au.

The AFL's official website features an interactive look at how players have responded to the proposal.

The club says it will not make further announcements until it has completed its vetting process.

Car thief given three years for abandoning child on highway

Police are treating the case as an attempted murder. (Brett Miller/Canadian Press)

In a statement late Monday, Ottawa police said the suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Daniel D. Fergus. It said Fergus, of the area of the Gatineau region west of Ottawa, left the child on Highway 9 and then returned the child, placed it in a car and drove off.

The statement from Ottawa police said the child had been reported missing by a mother in the southbound lanes of Highway 9 near Ottawa on Saturday night. She said she had been home alone, at about 7:30 p.m. when she spotted her 14-month-old in the backseat of the car. She said Fergus put the child in the front seat as she was driving and drove away from the scene without calling police, police said.

The child was not injured.

'We're taking it very seriously'

When asked how the search is going, spokesman Adam Collins said police are keeping an open mind and would not make a formal announcement until details are received.

"It's a very complex search situation with many different factors that go into it," Collins told CBC News. "We're certainly taking it very seriously."

Police have been asked for information on how the parents of the child were able to be separated from their child.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Ottawa police, the National Police Chiefs' Council and the Department of Justice, as well as the RCMP, have been contacted to provide any information available.

Usq hopes for further boost to student numbers

There will be a chance for those attending to get together with their classmates, the university has confirmed.

It is expected that more than 4,000 students will apply to enter the course in the second half of the year.

An earlier application from 2,900 students came from two regions of Ireland this week, to be joined by another 1,000 students today, from both sides of the Channel.

A third application will be lodged in the coming days.
